MONTREAL 1976
Although gymnastics had been part of the Olympics for awhile, it took one diminutive young gymnast from Romania to make the sport more appealing to the public at large. Nadia Comaneci was only 14-years-old when she competed in the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal. The young Romanian dazzled the judges to the point where they couldn't help but give her a perfect 10. Her poise, charm and sheer ability charmed a worldwide audience and made her a star.
Before 1976, no male or female had ever received a perfect score in any Olympic gymnastics event. And they didn't stop there, for not only did Comaneci receive the first perfect score, she then proceeded to get six more!
