MIRACLE ON ICE
"Do you believe in miracles?" The U.S. hockey team's semifinal win over the Soviets wasn't just one of the greatest moments in Olympic history. It was the greatest moment in U.S. sports history as well. In February 1980, America was mired in malaise, with unemployment and inflation high at home, hostages hopeless in Iran, and a Soviet invasion of Afghanistan heating up the Cold War. Things looked no better on the ice; the Soviets had crushed the U.S., 10-3, in an exhibition before the Olympics. But on that cold Lake Placid Friday afternoon, U.S. tied the score at two with a second left in the first period, Mike Eruzione's 30-footer made it 4-3, and during those grueling last 10 minutes, U.S. goalie Jim Craig saved more than just a game. For a night, he saved a nation's pride.
